As we enter the last week before Thanksgiving break, the wear and tear of the semester is evident. Teachers are juggling a myriad of responsibilities: end-of-term testing, lesson planning, data analysis, classroom management, dealing with disgruntled parents, and motivating students who seem ready to check out for the holidays. It’s no wonder they’re feeling the weight of it all.

Our teachers are the backbone of our schools, and they are deserving of not just the break ahead but also our support in the days leading up to it. Here are a few simple yet impactful ways to uplift and encourage your staff during this critical week:

1. Show Gratitude Loudly and Often

Take time to personally thank your teachers for their hard work. Whether it’s a handwritten note, a heartfelt email, or a quick word of appreciation in the hallway, these gestures can mean the world. Gratitude has a way of lightening the load, even if just for a moment.

2. Provide a Midweek Pick-Me-Up

Surprise your staff with a small treat. Whether it’s coffee and donuts in the lounge, a catered lunch, or simply a basket of snacks, these small acts of kindness can go a long way in boosting morale.

3. Adjust Expectations

Consider lightening the load where you can. For example, streamline meetings or postpone non-urgent deadlines. This can give teachers some much-needed breathing room to focus on their most pressing tasks.

4. Encourage Self-Care

Remind teachers to take care of themselves. Share tips for mindfulness, relaxation, or even just getting a good night’s sleep. A small gesture, like providing calming music in the teacher’s lounge or a quiet space for decompression, can make a big difference.

5. Build Community

Organize a short, optional activity that brings joy and connection. A Thanksgiving potluck, a gratitude board where staff can share what they’re thankful for, or even a quick trivia game during a staff meeting can foster camaraderie and lighten the mood.

6. Be Present and Accessible

Sometimes, the best way to support your team is just by being there. Walk the halls, check in with teachers, and let them know you’re there to help with any challenges they’re facing. Knowing they’re not alone can be incredibly reassuring.

7. Highlight the Positives

Amid the stress, it’s easy to forget the good moments. Share stories of success from the semester or highlight student achievements to remind teachers of the positive impact they’ve had.

As we all count down the days to a well-deserved break, let’s make this last week one of encouragement, gratitude, and teamwork. A little effort now can make all the difference in helping our teachers finish strong—and start their Thanksgiving break feeling appreciated and supported.
